Content Audit: Overview and Working
As content discovery shifts from traditional search to AI-driven platforms, content optimization must evolve too. Today, it’s not just about rankings — it’s about relevance, structure, and intent that both users and intelligent systems can understand.
That’s why at Scalenut, we’ve moved beyond SEO to become a GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) platform — helping you create and optimize content that performs across search engines, AI assistants, and generative models.
A key part of that evolution? Content Audits.
What Is a Content Audit?
A content audit is a detailed evaluation of your website’s content to assess its performance, quality, and relevance — not just in the eyes of Google, but also how it aligns with AI systems and user intent.
It involves reviewing every page across your domain to identify what’s working, what needs improvement, and what no longer serves your goals.
The purpose? To enhance visibility, engagement, and conversions across today’s search and discovery landscape.
Why Content Audits Matter in the Age of AI-Powered Discovery?
Identify Content Gaps - Identify missing topics, questions, or keywords your current content doesn’t address — especially those that AI platforms prioritize.
Enhance SEO + AI Compatibility - Improve your content’s performance not just for search rankings, but for AI summarization, snippet generation, and semantic clarity.
Boost User Experience - Deliver clearer, more relevant, and engaging content to your audience by aligning with their actual search and discovery behaviors.
Streamline & Strengthen Your Library - Remove or refresh outdated, redundant, or underperforming content to focus resources on what truly drives outcomes.
How to use the Content Audit?
STEP 1
Select the ‘Content Audit’ module from the left navigation panel under GEO Core, and connect the domain with GSC to get started.
STEP 2
From the dropdown arrow, you can either connect to a domain you had connected previously and disconnected from the Content audit, or add a new domain by clicking on ‘Add New Domain’.
STEP 3
Once you’ve made your pick, click ‘Get Started’.
STEP 4
Once you’ve connected the GSC, select the domain, and country and then select the pages.
STEP 5
Once you’ve selected the country from the list, now it’s time to select the pages from the domain. You can either opt for ‘Top 100 Pages by Traffic’ which is also the recommended option, or you can choose ‘Select Pages Manually’ for full control. The page limit is also shown here. Once satisfied with the selection of pages, whether manually or recommended, simply click ‘Create Content Audit.’
STEP 6
When you click “Select Pages Manually,” a pop-up window appears displaying all available pages from your connected domain—along with their traffic and impression metrics. You can:
1. Individually select or deselect specific URLs using the checkboxes.
2. Use the filters at the top to quickly select from the Top 10, Top 50, Top 100, or Top 200 pages based on traffic.
3. Search for any specific page using the “Search page URL” field to locate and include it instantly.
STEP 7
Each page listed in your Content Audit dashboard is accompanied by important performance metrics. Here's what each one means:
1. Content Score - A GEO-based content score that measures how well your content is optimized for search engines, AI systems, and user intent. Higher = better structure, clarity, and relevance.
2. Position - Tracks your page’s ranking on SERPs. Arrows indicate if it has moved up or down recently.
3. Traffic - The number of users visiting the page — a direct measure of performance and reach.
4. Impressions - The number of times your page appears in search results. High impressions but low traffic may signal a CTR issue.
5. CTR (Click-Through Rate) - CTR is calculated based on the ratio of traffic to impressions on the page.
Note: You can click on the toggle to view the URL of the particular page. Or, utilize the filter and search option.
STEP 8
The AI Prompt shown under each page in the Content Audit dashboard highlights the core query or user intent that the content is meant to address. It reflects what users are most likely searching or asking when they land on that page. This prompt is central to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — helping you ensure your content directly answers real-world questions that AI systems, search engines, and users care about.
STEP 9
You have the option to add or delete the pages. To delete a specific page, select the page/s, and click on the ‘Remove Selected’ option.
STEP 10
Similarly, in case you wish to add more pages, click on ‘Add Pages’.
STEP 11
Next, you can switch the tab from ‘Pages’ to ‘Ranking Opportunities.’ These pages have the greatest potential for rapid traffic growth in the least amount of time. Optimize the Content Score to maximise traffic for these pages.
STEP 12
Based on the data available, if you wish to optimize any page, just hover over it and click the Optimize button. You’d be redirected to the Content Optimizer.
STEP 13
You can also add multiple domains by clicking on the ‘Manage Domain’ option.
STEP 14
You can add a new domain by clicking on ‘Add New Domain’. Or, remove the existing one by clicking on the bin icon.
Please note: You'd have to manually refresh the data as per the refresh date. The system does not refresh the data on its own.
How AI Prompt Works in Content Audit?
The AI Prompt you see under each page reflects the core user question or intent that the content is meant to answer.
During optimization, Scalenut intelligently identifies and auto-maps the prompt based on the content’s context and structure.
When you click “Optimize,” this prompt is automatically added to the Prompt section inside Cruise Mode’s Context tab, and the blog includes the answer for the prompt in any of the sections, ensuring that:
The content stays aligned with the user’s search intent.
The AI understands the purpose of the page.
You maintain GEO consistency across all optimized pages.
This saves time and ensures your content remains purpose-driven, even if the prompt wasn’t manually set earlier.
